Ceremony

I have been working with different forms of Ceremony for 25 years now, starting in a Wiccan coven, where for 7years I learnt a lot about how to create a powerful, genuine ceremony. We had a policy of allowing in non-coven members, so our ceremonies had to be both simple and easy to follow, yet still retain a feeling of magic and power. I then went on to work with non- Wiccans, in a series of outdoor camps run by Oak Dragon, where it became clearer still what the essential ingredients of a good ceremony are. These can be summarized in the following 6 steps:

1. Prepare the space and people with purification and focus.
2. State intention and motivation.
3. Build up power through movement and sound, e.g. dancing and chanting.
4. Use the power raised to achieve the desired result on the magical level.
5. Wind down the energy, and give thanks to the invisible beings that have been present.
6. Close down the space and return it and the people to their normal state.

These steps can be applied to any ceremony, whether private and personal, or in a larger group, and can create a deeply satisfying event that really helps to mark an important time. Examples include naming ceremonies for new babies, rites of passage for young people as they enter puberty, joining ceremonies for lovers, and the cutting of ties when divorce or death come into our lives.
